Here’s my review on the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy and an interview with Executive Producers, Dan and Kevin Hageman. “We wanted to introduce a younger audience to the Star Trek franchise” and I truly believe they achieved that goal with this animated series, streaming on Paramount+ and now on DVD. If you have not seen the series yet, give it a watch soon!
SERIES REVIEW
Star Trek: Prodigy premiered on Paramount+ on Oct 28, 2021, and was released on DVD, on January 3, 2023. This animated series is vibrant, fun, and a great way to introduce the younger generation to the Star Trek franchise. I remember watching Star Trek growing up and now as an adult, was so excited to introduce Star Trek to my kids with Star Trek: Prodigy.
One of the things I mentioned to the Executive Producers was that I was so excited that they brought Captain Kathryn Janeway to the animated series. I believe in having Kate Mulgrew from “Star Trek: Voyager” as the voice of a hologram version of Captain Kathryn Janeway provided a familiar connection to the “Trek” universe for those of the older generation. I think a lot of people will agree with me on that too. There is just something about having a familiar character that makes the connection to keep all age Trek fans wanting to see the series and connect to other generations.
The series itself as a stand-alone is a lot of fun. The animation is vibrant and the group of motley characters they bring together is quite the ensemble. Gwyndala, a Vau N’Akat female voiced by Ella Purnell. Gywn was created daughter of The Diviner and was sometimes referred to as his “progeny”. She is of course one of my favorites. I love that she is strong and has the ability to control things with her mind.
Of course, like all series, (well I say that and I could be wrong), there’s a fun character that just steals the show at times and that is Murf! Murf looks like a galactic blog of a pigeon but is actually a melanoid slime worm. He is the cutest and I’m so happy I have a little plush of him!

You’ll get an Avatar and Last Air Bender feel when watching the series, and the music will also impress you. Michael Giacchino and Nami Melumad co-created the music and produced the soundtrack that is, in my opinion, one of the best in the Star Trek franchise. Both had previously worked with Star Trek, Giacchino (2009), and Melumad (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), the familiarity with the franchise will take the viewers into new depths with the series.
