Direct Streaming versus Watching a Series on TV

March 11, 2014 By Candy

TELEVISION

I love watching television, there’s no secret when it comes to my television obsession. Fortunately for me, I can watch shows that I miss using the DVR function with our cable subscription. I wonder at times what we did before DVR.. oh yeah those crazy things called videos! I never wanted to try learning how to set up the VCR to record a show so that went out the window for me. I’m mentioned before I don’t like to read directions have I? Yeah, I’m no good when it comes to taking a piece of paper that tells you how to build something or whatever and make it happen. There are exceptions to that rule of course.. but that’s another post!

Ok, so back to my shows!

Ah yes. Video On Demand has changed my life. In a good way ofcourse. Since having children I can’t just come sit and watch the show when it’s live. No, NEVER! Mommy gets to watch t.v. at night, after everyone is asleep. Goodness, makes me sound like I’m watching porn or something.. I promise I am not. This lady is trying to get her Real Housewives, Scandal or Grey’s on.. no lie! Gosh can I just break for a second and say I love the Olympics but they truly almost made me not miss my Thursday or Sunday night television. But I will say that the commercials were making me excited about March! Ok back to the normal scheduled programming.. again.

Two other programs or products have changed my life, for the better I might add. Netflix and Hulu Plus.. Yes we are nuts and pay for them both. I haven’t even bothered to look into Amazon. I’m not trying to go there.

One of the things I love about On-Demand is the fact that a day after the live programming the show (well most of them- I’m mad b/c Amazing Race is not on Demand) and so I enjoy them that way. Good stuff right?

Ok so last summer I came upon Orange is the New Black, a Netflix original series. Well I started watching it after it premiered and so I was behind on the curve. I sat and watched hours upon hours of the first season. I finished it within a few days. A record for this tv junkie. I hear the next season will be available in the summer. I can’t wait!  I recently got hooked on House of Cards. Again, behind on the curve for this one so again I devoured the first season in a few days. I’m hooked! What can I say? LOL So recently the second season became available for viewing. But get this- the ENTIRE second season! I could not believe it! Why on earth would Netflix do this?!  Well turns out the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings- felt it would work well for Netflix.

Honestly I don’t know what to think. I love it in one sense. I love knowing that the answers to the cliffhanger on one episode can easily be found out as soon as I click on the next number in the series. Or I can wait a whole week like a good cable watching girl. Let’s not fool ourselves, we are going to sit thru and watch more television.. I will watch marathons all night and by the time my husband wakes up at 4 am I am to the point where my body is like, “Girl just watch til the end of this episode and we are hanging it up!”  I have to psyche myself up.. That’s just what I do and I get thru it.

That’s my dilemma, I love watching cable and I’m hooked on the programming on direct streaming too..

Question:

Which do you prefer: Direct Streaming or Cable?
