One of the most anticipated animated films debuted this holiday weekend. Did you get to see Disney Encanto? We did! Here’s my movie review and I’ve got a fun butterfly craft for you to make. You’ll have to see the film for the significance of the butterfly, so you will just have to trust me. Make sure to let me know in the comments if you saw it and what you thought of Disney Encanto.
The Madrigal family is magical and everyone in the family has a special gift. That is everyone except Mirabel Madrigal. The cute curly haired sister always has a smile on her face and a positive thing to say about loving being a Madrigal. She is truly the heroine of the film and such a joy to watch. The film itself is beautifully done, it’s vibrant and beautiful. I can’t wait to be able to watch it again to really take in the film and look at everything.
What I Loved
All Latinos are not the same. We all look and sound different depending on where our origin country. Encanto is a film based on a Colombian family. The beautiful thing about the film is that Colombians are shown in the beautiful color wheel that is the reality of a lot of Latino cultures. We are white, we are black, blonde, brunettes, redheads, curly hair, straight hair, and any other beautiful blend. It was beautiful to see on screen. I did see some Colombian references but I don’t think it was as pronounced as it was in Disney Pixar Coco. My friend Taty over at CoolMomsCoolTips is Colombian and she wrote a great post about Encanto, go read it HERE.
Lin Manuel Miranda outdid himself with the music, he wrote and produced 8 of the songs in the film. The soundtrack also features “Colombia, Mi Encanto” by Carlos Vives and Sebastián Yatra performs the original song “Dos Oruguitas” in Spanish in the film, as well as the English language version of the song, in the end-credits. The physical soundtrack will be available on Dec. 17 and is available for pre-order.
Okay for Kids
Absolutely! I would say appropriate age range for Disney Encanto is 5 and up. There are some scary scenes but Disney did a great job in not making it overly violent. The film runs an hour and 49 minutes so it should hold a 5 year old’s attention. I’m telling you, the colors make it so that you don’t want to look away in case you miss something.
Craft Time – Mirabel’s Butterfly Pin
I don’t know if it was my ADHD brain or what, but as soon as I saw the butterfly on Mirabel’s blouse I knew I had to make it.
Supplies:
- Magenta colored yarn
- black beads (2 sizes)
- wire
- jewelry pliers
- glue gun
- safety pin
Measure the wire to 3.5 inches. The butterfly body won’t be that big, remember you have to “tie it off” on the ends to keep the beads attached. Make a curl to keep the beads on and then begin adding the beads to make the body of the butterfly. Add a small bead to the end and fill until you get close to the top. Grab your pliers and curl the top so the beads are locked. You’ve got a small line of beads on a wire, cut another piece of wire so you can make antennas. Before you start adding beads, run it through the top of the body strip so it is attached. Curl the end so that the beads stay. See the pictures below, it’s kind of hard to explain when you don’t know the jewelry making terminology. But once you’ve made the butterfly body the rest is pretty easy.
Then you grab your yarn and like wrap it around your hand or piece of cardboard, like you’re going to make a pom pom. Make sure the wrap is not too tight and not too loose either and that it’s going to fit the size of your butterfly. Tie it in the middle and add a drop of glue to the front to add the butterfly and a drop of glue to the back to adhere the safety pin and voila! That’s it! Super easy and super cute!

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope. The film is directed by Jared Bush (co-director “Zootopia”) and Byron Howard (“Zootopia,” “Tangled”), co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (writer “The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez”), and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer; the screenplay is by Castro Smith and Bush. “Encanto” features original songs by Emmy®, GRAMMY® and Tony Award® winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”); Germaine Franco (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” “Little,” “Tag”) composed the original score.
