I love to sight see and explore with my family!

Even before the hubs came back into the Army, I loved dragging him to different places. I hope to start writing up more posts like this one so you can virtually go where we have been. That way, if you’ve ever wondered,”Is it worth the drive?” You can look up my blog post and say, “She had fun, we should totally go!”

Frontier Texas Museum

Abilene, Texas

While our niece was in town, I wanted to take her into Abilene and check out a few places. I started doing research and came upon Frontier Texas museum. We had never gone there either, so it was a treat for us all. We packed up the kids and headed out on a Saturday morning. From San Angelo, it’s roughly 89 miles and about an hour and a half drive. Not bad.We always relate to driving home or driving from Florida.. so anything under 6 or 19 hours is very do able for us on any given day.

The set up of Frontier Texas is unlike any I have seen. You walk into a building that actually doubles as a visitor center. There is the wall of brochures for you to choose from and at the walk up counter is where you pay the admission for Frontier Texas.

Admission is as follows:
Adults $8
Seniors (60 and over) $6
Military $6
Students and teachers (with valid ID) $5
Children (ages 3-12) $4
Children (under 3) FREE

The whole experience is actually very well choreographed. I say choreographed because each of the sections has timers because the exhibits have movies that go along and inform you of what’s coming up. It’s very high tech, I was really impressed.

When your tour begins you walk into a room set up like a theater. During that into movie, you’ll learn the gist of the museum/experience and you’ll be introduced into people you will learn about.

The top picture shows a hologram of one of the narrators from the frontier story. There are a few holograms of people that were poignant in the frontier times of Texas. I really enjoyed listening to the holograms. When you walk up to the screen and you aren’t paying attention you actually have to double take! Our at least I did.. LOL

There is more to look at, but I didn’t want to spoil it for you. The movie at the end of the tour is really awesome. The room is shaped like a cylinder and everyone has swivel seats that look like slices of tree trunks to sit in. The movie goes all the way around the room so you can swivel to all sides very easily. Also a side note- none of the exhibits say- stay off.. I’m very paranoid so I don’t allow my children to attempt to climb on or touch anything when we go places. I did see one mom put her child up in the stagecoach.. that was scary! Personally I don’t recommend it.. 

After going thru the museum and gift shop.. Yes, as you walk out of the tour you walk past a wall of very impressive fire power from back in the day and you come into the gift shop area.

This is one of the items I loved! I should have bought it, but I’ve got more than enough coffee cups..

After purchasing a couple things for the kids we headed into the courtyard.

Let them get some more energy out before we got back in the car to do some more driving around. The museum itself is located in downtown Abilene. There is such charm in these old west Texas towns. A lot of old architecture is still intact and it’s so beautiful.

If you are able to make the trip to Abilene don’t miss out on Frontier Texas. It’s not a huge museum, but I think it was worth the money spent. The kids enjoyed it and so did the hubs and I. He being a history nerd, he enjoyed the review on his Texas history.

Is it ok with a toddler? There were some moments during the movies that I wasn’t sure if Ezra would make it.. but we made it thru. I would say, why not.
