Fishing has traditionally been seen as a man’s hobby. Fathers and grandfathers take their sons out fishing. Male friends go fishing together for male bonding time. Men, sit around lakes and riverbanks trying to catch fish. The girls of the family were rarely invited along. But, fishing, like many other areas of life, is changing. More and more women are going fishing. Fathers are taking their daughters, female colleagues are going along with the boys, and groups of women are heading out fishing together. Women are even entering fishing competitions more than they ever have before. Sea fishing squads and other groups are keen to add female anglers to their teams, and any sexism in fishing is being tackled head-on.

But why? Why are more women taking up fishing, either competitively or as a hobby, and why should more continue to do so?
It’s Relaxing
If you ask a man why he goes fishing, he might tell you that it’s to catch fish. Ask a woman why she goes fishing, and she might tell you that it’s to get a break from real-life, some time to herself, a chance to unwind and destress and even time away from her family.
Women today are doing more than ever. Many of us are trying to be everything to everyone. We’re mothers, wives, housekeepers, cleaners, secretaries, friends, businesswomen, employers and everything in between, and we’re trying to do it all well. So it’s no surprise that we’re often stressed out and in desperate need of a rest.
Fishing can be the answer. Fishing is peaceful and slow. It’s more about the process than the fish themselves. It can be a great excuse to get away from everything, to be alone, to clear your head and to reduce your stress. More women are appreciating this, and so more women are spending more time with a fishing rod in hand.
Women Make Great Fishers
Your first time your first-time walleye fishing can be intimidating, especially if you are surrounded by men. But, most women find that they soon get the hang of things. Women are often more patient than men. They are better at the long waiting game that often comes with fishing. They are able to take their time and enjoy this part of the sport. Women are also logical and thoughtful, which can help. Generally, women have many of the skills that make great fishers, and they are often very good at it.
Women Attract Women
Entering a man’s world is always overwhelming. Women often stay away from hobbies, places, sports and even careers that are largely male over worries of sexism, feeling left out, not fitting in or being uncomfortable. So, these places remain male-dominated.
But, as soon as one woman makes a place for herself, others start to follow. For every one woman that takes up fishing, more women follow. Women, attract other women, and they will continue to do so. More women are fishing because more women are fishing. Why not join them?
