Call Your Mother Q&A
After the preview we had the opportunity for a virtual Q&A with the director and a few of the actors from the series. Director Kari Lizer shared that she drew from her own experiences as en empty nester for the show, but she hasn’t chased her kids around now that they have become adults.
Segdwick was asked if her children watched her shows and she told us that her kids don’t watch her (or husband Kevin Bacon’s) shows and that their children don’t want to think of their parents as anything but mom and dad.
Emma Cayamares shared that her character Celia is honest and savvy. She knows who she is and she knows what she wants. But Emma said she’s more of a people pleaser in real life than Celia. I’m excited to see how her Latina heritage will come into play more throughout the season, Cayamares is of Cuban and Nicaraguan descent.
Kari said, “We hope that it’s funny.” The whole cast hopes that what resonates is that the characters in Call Your Mother are people that really care about each other. Just like during Covid, some people have lost their connections with each other. Hopefully, we can create new connections with each other.
Call Your Mother takes place in a post-Covid world. Quarantine/pandemic will be referenced in some episodes, noting how hard it was for Jean during quarantine to be away from her kids. Sherri Shepherd plays Sharon, Jean’s best friend, in the show. She and Kyra had an instant connection and she can expect to be seen in 9 of the 13 episodes. There is a laugh-track right now, but it is set up for a live audience eventually.
