Secrets are hard to keep ya’ll. The secret from October’s visit to Marvel Studios in Atlanta, Georgia was way hard but if you read my post HERE, the secret is out. During our set visit we got to do a few interviews with some of the cast from the film. As you can imagine, we got to talk to some pretty big players from the film. This week I’ll be sharing those interviews with you! And on Thursday I’ll be sharing more exciting news with you! So stay tuned! Today I give you a sneak peek of the set visit, a look at Pym Lab and interviews with Executive Producer Stephen Broussard and Production Designer Shepherd Frankel. Thanks to Disney for inviting me to Atlanta to visit the Pinewood Studios filming of Marvel Studios Antman and The Wasp!!
But first a look at Pym Lab! It was so cool being on set in Atlanta. I’d never had the opportunity to be on-set of a film before and this was super cool. Seeing the actors interact with the crew was really neat. You think celebrities are all uppity but they truly are “just like us” and the set and crew of Antman and The Wasp was pure harmony. We got to have lunch with the cast and crew too! Paul and Evangeline would wave hello to us (as much as we wanted to run over and chat them up- they were filming so we didn’t want to distract them too much) and we watched as they interacted with each other and Abby Ryder Fortson. It was a pretty damn awesome day.
We spoke with Production Designer Sheperd Frankel and he gave us great insight on the set. Talking all things big and small! “There was not one oversized prop in that film and we shot all these environments in camera because the camera behaved certain ways and there wanted to be a sense of real, where walls were and how a camera can move and tell a story in these small environments, so that was a really cool technical element of the first Ant-Man that we are doubling down on, on this one, so the difference is we, you know, we meet our characters a couple years later.”
The Pym Lab and Easter Eggs!!
“It is an exciting environment built from found pieces and everyday kind of, like, erector sets and Lego pieces and we’ve set up a series of, yes, Easter eggs, that I almost don’t want to kind of spill because I want you guys to find them and see them and it’s being taken apart, but in the film, you will see them and we’ve built them live, so unlike the first movie where we didn’t build one oversized prop. And next time I see you, we could talk about how many things you found after you’ve seen the film. In this film, we definitely built oversize set pieces and objects to be integrated as if Hank Pym is building a lab on his table and then he would grow it because he knows how to grow and shrink things. He would grow it, work on it, habitat, you know, inhabit it and function in there and then it would shrink again and it was if you and I were to make a model and we’d use a paper clip and we’d drop a glue cap occasionally, so there are things to find.” Yes! I can’t wait to see the film and be on the look out for these Easter eggs!!
Here’s our group picture from Pym’s lab.
As you can imagine there was a lot of “larger than life” items it was very neat to see them up close. Being with this group of ladies was so much fun, and since it was “secret trip” we didn’t share anything online during the trip. We were able to really take in the moments and experiences from this trip. Very very cool.
We also had the opportunity to speak with Executive Producer Stephen Broussard. Here’s what he shared with us about the film, they were actually in the final week of shooting so the pressure was on to wrap it all up.
So as we prepare for Antman and The Wasp, let’s think about the films from the Marvel Universe that have happened since and where the sequel kicks back up.
Here’s a tip: Make sure to watch all of the films in the MCU so that you aren’t wondering what is happening during Antman and The Wasp!
“The film takes place kind of roughly since the last time we picked up with these characters, which would have been Civil War, Scott Lang in Civil War. And the events of that film were that he kind of got swept up in this mission that Captain America’s team asked him to come on, that he didn’t quite even understand what he was getting into. And he ended up getting thrown in a high security prison and at the end of that movie busted out by Captain America. And then we don’t know where his story left off. This story starts up with the premise that Scott is a family man, and so much of the first movie was about being a good father to his daughter, and being present for his daughter, and putting his old criminal ways behind him.
In between movies, he turned himself in to the authorities that had started this thing called the Sokovia Accords, which you might remember from Civil War, which was the government agency that’s going to monitor super hero activity that rubs Captain America and some others the wrong way. And he basically said, I’ll sign what I’ve got to sign, I’ll plead down, I’ll serve time, just let me get this off my record, kind of thing for his daugther.”
Obvioulsy, being fans of the MCU we tried to get as much as we could to prepare us for Infinity War, Broussard was tight lipped but here’s what he had to say when we asked about Antman and The Wasp overlapping with IW.
“Well where does it overlap it is an excellent question. So much so that I probably can’t answer too much. Where it fall on the timeline it kind of all make sense when it comes out, I don’t want to sort of time it too much. Because that in itself could be a spoiler. But I will say that Infinity War is this massive universe crashing together, all these characters huge movie, like the biggest movie we’ve ever made. And by design like the first Ant-Man, this is a turn back into really small, really contained, temporally contained, the fact that it’s only three days, by design that I think will feel like a good chaser. It’s a short time period the way that they don’t have too far- they can’t get too far out, it’s all running around San Francisco. But we shot a lot on stage, but we’ve been in and around the Atlanta streets a lot but it will be for San Francisco. You know, and it’s all- there’s a big car chase at the end of the movie all through the streets of San Francisco and it’s on one shot there in San Francisco, they take a left and it’s Atlanta and hopefully it all feels seamless when it’s all said and done. But yeah we’ve been all over and we go to Savannah for a little bit.”
And here’s my pic!
Make sure to catch AntMan and The Wasp in theaters on July 6th!
