Oh it’s my favorite time of the year! I absolutely love the Christmas holiday and the crafts that come along with the season! This week I have more ideas to decorate your tree or around your home! There’s nothing like positive words or sayings to help people’s spirits. While this is the happiest time of the year, it can also be a hard time for some, you are in my thoughts my friends. These fun yarn ornaments can say words to spread Christmas and Holiday cheer or you can make words to uplift and give hope.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Popsicle sticks (different sizes would be great but if you can’t find multiple sizes you can always cut a standard sized stick down)
- Scissors
- Yarn (whatever color you’d like)
- Glue (For best results I recommend hot glue)
- Fishing line or ornament hangers
This craft is very easy so the directions are truly minimal. It’s up to you if you want to make it more intricate or more simple. You’ll want to start by deciding what word or statement you want to make with the sticks. I went easy and started with “Joy.” I think I’ll be making Noel and Christmas this weekend. I’ll share them on Instagram after I’m done! If you want to do the word “Joy,” this is how I set it up.
I used small popsicle sticks but like I mentioned you can cut them down if needed. I still needed to cut these down a little bit. To make the “J” I used two sticks . One for the long and the other I cut into two for the curve. For the “O” I used three. Two long and I cut the third in half for the mid points of the “o.” For the “Y” I used two. It’s not a perfect “Y” but just remember you’ll be covering them with yarn so you can round off the edges.
After you glue your sticks together, you can grab your ball of yarn and put a bead of glue to star with then begin wrapping the popsicle sticks. Pretty easy right? Add another bead of glue to seal the ends and round off your letter. After the glue cools cut about 2 inches of fishing line and hold the ends together to make a loop and glue the loop onto the back of your letter. Make sure you don’t burn yourself if you are using hot glue. *Another option is tying the fishing line or tying a loop in with yarn.
This is what your finished project will look like. You can see that the fishing line is clear so it will look like the words are floating in your tree. You can also glue the letters together so it’s not three separate letters. I recommend placing a popsicle stick behind the letters and securing them that way.
The more letters you make the more intricate this craft can become, but it’s sure to be one you’ll enjoy seeing in your tree or around your home.
