During the summer we enjoy a lot of time outdoors. Living in west Texas, the days may be hot but the evenings there is always a beautiful breeze blowing. One of the things the hubs and I enjoy is being outside at dusk after the boys have gone to bed. It’s like our weekend nightcap and we enjoy a cold Dr Pepper. I love to craft when I have time and the hubs and I were talking about needing coasters for outside one evening so I decided to make a few one of a kind Dr Pepper outdoor crafts for you.
I’ve been a fan of Dr Pepper for a very long time as a matter of fact my husband turned me onto it. Want to know how much we enjoy Dr Pepper products? We’ve been to both Dr Pepper museums, the one in Waco, Texas and the other in Dublin.
How about that?! Pretty funny right?!
I love having brand items, but making things is something I really enjoy. I was very excited to come up with two crafts for this post. One of a kind homemade Dr Pepper coasters and Dr Pepper can candle lanterns! The supplies are very simple, you can get them all at Walmart of course! I love the variety of Dr Pepper at Walmart! I was super stoked to find the Dr Pepper cherry cans and a four pack of the Dr Pepper glass bottles too! Super cute and love to have those on hand in case I want to make someone a soda basket with goodies! Hey -there’s another craft idea!
How to Make the Dr Pepper Coasters
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Dr. Pepper cans empty and dry
- Wood planks for coasters. (I used wood flooring plank pieces)
- Hot Glue Gun & Glue
- Modpodge glue
- Scissors
- Embellishments
- Paint & Paint brush (color of your liking/choice)
*Please be safe when working with aluminum cans. They are sharp and can cut into skin very easily. This craft is not intended for children.*
Carefully cut into the can and cut out any piece of the image you want on your coasters. I wanted the big logo from the 10-12-2 Dr Pepper can and the cherry logo from the Dr Pepper Cherry can. Those two are our favorites, so I wanted to make sure to use both. While I waited for the hot glue gun to get warm, I wanted to paint the coasters some to give them a little aged look. I mixed red and brown acrylic paint and painted around the edges of the planks. The acrylic paint dries faster then others.
After the paint dries, I hot glued the tin logos onto the planks. I made sure to use a towel or dish towel to place the piece down on the plank. Remember the glue is hot and it heats up the tin very fast! Be very careful please!
Note these coasters are larger than normal coasters. You can always cut down the planks if you’d like. I wanted to keep them big for our bigger cups and have these as our outdoor coasters too. Using this type of wood makes it more durable for being outside in the elements too.
The embellishments were put down with modpodge, or you can use any craft glue. I found these silver pieces and thought they would look cute and give the effect of a can. I love the way they turned out.
How to Make Dr Pepper Lanterns
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Empty and dry Dr Pepper cans
- Scissors
- X acto knife
- Tea lights (I found citronella tea lights at Walmart!)
*Please be safe when working with aluminum cans. They are sharp and can cut into skin very easily. This craft is not intended for children.*
The lanterns were a little trickier to make. Please be very careful when using the x acto knife, as you’ll be using it more than the scissors in this craft. As you can see in the picture above, I cut strips into the can and bent them to resemble a lantern. You can measure an inch to an inch and a half a part to be more precise in your strip size. I wanted to give the lantern a logo so on each of the cans, I decided to cut around the logo and let it “hang” as the entry for the candle. The bottom part of the logo I simply folded into the bottom of the can. That’s where the candle will be placed.
I was fortunate to find citronella tea lights at Walmart (I had no idea they made these!!) and placed it inside of the lantern. Please note the can will get hot from having the lit candle inside. If you wish to preserve your lantern you can always string them up with Christmas lights too! These mini lanterns are placed outside on our outdoor table. The citronella candle will be nice to keep away the mosquitoes!
These crafts were so much fun and I’m so excited to use them outdoors in our patio area!
