Mary Poppins Returns is in theaters TOMORROW, December 19th and you’ll finally get to meet the three amazing children that Mary takes on a new adventure. We had the opportunity to speak with two of the three. Meet the children of Mary Poppins Returns Pixie Davies (Anabelle) and Joel Dawson (Georgie). Thanks to Disney for inviting me to the MaryPoppinsReturnsEvent press event, all opinions are my own. This interview was so much fun, it’s always a blast to speak with the child actors. They are quick to answer and really enjoy being asked about the film they are promoting, Pixie and Joel did an exceptional job.
Favorite Part of Filming
When films include child actors, there are laws they have to follow in terms of how many hours the child can work etc. It’s always so much fun to ask their favorite parts. I’ve heard from meeting their heroes to the food. Here’s what Pixie and Joel shared with us:
Joel: “I really liked the part when I had to dive through the bushes and then got dragged along by the kite. That was a really fun scene.”
Pixie: “I think it was Tripping the Light Fantastic because it was just incredible watching the dance. It just gets better every time.”
The Animation
In the film you’ll see some animated scenes much like the original with new songs of course. We asked the children their thoughts on the animation and those scenes in particular. When asked about the animated chase scene Pixie said, “That was so much fun. It was because the music was being played, I actually felt like we were actually in a chase and it was really awesome, yeah.”
One of my favorite songs (all of them are my favorite) from the film is “Royal Doulton Bowl” and the Pixie add what she thought of the animated scenes, “It was really surprising because you don’t know all the details that are gonna be there, and then you watch it and it’s there.”
Mentor-ship on Set
During each of the films we always hear of how the main actors or directors take the young actors “under their wings” and provide mentor-ship and pointers for certain scenes etc. We asked Pixie and Joel about who helped them during filming. Wish we had their assistant to tip our hat off to! Sounds like she did an amazing job with the kiddos.
Joel: “Definitely the PA, Jo. She was our child PA and she was really, really lovely. Yeah, she helped us a lot, yeah.”
The Costumes
Pixie: “They were beautiful. They were. I really liked them ‘cause I like dressing kind of funky. And it was really awesome wearing some really cool clothes from another century.”
The Original Mary Poppins
We had to ask the children if they had the opportunity to see the original Mary Poppins. Here’s what Pixie said to us:
Pixie: “Yes we did, yeah. It was my favorite film before I was in this one.”
