Do you remember hearing about the baby hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo last year? The coverage on social media showed a tiny hippo, named Fiona. I’m very excited to share Fiona’s very own book with you today, Fiona the Hippo written and illustrated by Richard Cowdrey. The blog post and giveaway is sponsored by Zonderkidz, however all opinions are my own. Fiona was born pre-maturely in January 2017 and weighed 29 lbs. Since birth, Fiona has grown a following and continues to thrive at her exhibit in the Cincy zoo. Writer and Illustrator Cowdrey does an amazing job of sharing the story of Fiona’s can do and positive attitude exclaiming, “I’ve got this” as she takes on the challenge.

Visits to the zoo were a part of childhood for my family. The Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin, Texas had the very first hippo exhibit I’d ever seen. When I heard about Fiona, I was very excited. A baby hippo! She was very delicate at birth at 29lbs and has become a zoological phenomenom. Hippos are always a top visit when we go to zoos. Here’s a pic of the last time we visited the zoo in Lufkin with our friends Brice and Nadia.

Since receiving Fiona The Hippo, the book has been loved very much and Ezra has been asking a lot of questions about hippos. We hope to visit the zoo in Alexandria soon to see if there is a hippo exhibit. Ezra’s reading skills are improving but he still likes for us to read to and with him sometimes.

About the Author

    Wow, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I’ve always been a fan of the cats – lions and tigers. Elephants are cool, but so are hippos! It’s been many years since I’ve been to the zoo so having trouble remembering if I’ve seen a hippo there.

    I love the King of the Jungle = the Lion!
    The lion in the picture with the cute kids, is just like the 500lb cement lion statue that I have in front of our house. I haven’t seen a look-a-like lion like mine before.

    Mine was the giraffe until Fiona came along! I have never met her in person but just love that little hippo. Plus she is in my home state of Ohio! I live in Oregon now, but my heart will always be in Ohio.

    Monkeys are probably my favorite zoo animals to watch. We have never seen Fiona, but here in Florida we have a famous hippo named Lu. He is close to 60 years old, and the oldest hippo in captivity. He is really neat to see.
